着眼点文頭の The が2つ並んだら、この構文。
The 比較級 S V, the 比較級 S V. 「〜すればするほど、ますます…」
動詞が be のときは省略されることが多い（The sooner, the better.）。

注意前半は従属節、後半が主節。もとの形は We climbed high. と It became cold. で、比較級を the と一緒に前に出している。
